To Risk

I'm trying to get inspired for a sermon on the 4th UU principle ("a free and responsible search for truth and meaning"). I've written all of 3 sermons in my life and it's pretty daunting, especially amidst the exhaustion of CPE and that it's the first time I'll preach to a congregation that I'm not a part of. Feel free to send me your thoughts on what a "free and responsible search" means to you!

In the meantime, I came upon this reading in the UU hymnal:
    To Risk
To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out for another is to risk explosing our true self.
To place our ideas - our dreams - before the crowd is to risk loss.
To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To hope is to risk despair.
To try is to risk failure.
To live is to risk dying.

I'm generally risk-averse person, but I'm trying to risk more. I love how this captures the joys and terrors of taking risks!

"It is through struggle that we find ourselves. Through struggle… It is not through sitting back and letting life happen, it is not through taking the easy road, because to do other wise seems too hard.

Our faith affirms this doesn’t it? We as Unitarian Universalists believe in the search for truth and meaning. The search. Not the simple acceptance of the answers that those who came before us have laid out. We don’t come to church each Sunday to be given “the answers”. Our faith holds dear an idea of struggle, of doing the hard work to find the/a/our truth"

Huh! Thanks for connecting searching for truth & meaning to the risk poem - so true, and so obvious, and I hadn't made the connection when I wrote this post.
